This delightful cottage was once indeed a hay loft and was totally redesigned in 2012. The central feature of this exceptional small house is a picture-book living room window which looks directly south over exceptional fields, forest and sky; through which hay used to pass to feed the cattle that lived a few metres away. This is a particularly clever piece of architecture; on the ground floor there is a double bedroom with its own private bathroom. Upstairs there is a spectacular and long series of rooms including a large living/dining room (with that window) as well as a landing, kitchen and large double bedroom with an en-suite bathroom. Outside there is ample space for wellies and bikes, all undercover and watched over by pillars painted in the trademark pink of the estate. As a guest at The Hayloft you also have full access to The Glen Dye Arms, a BYOB pub complete with roaring log fire, ancient bar and record player, as well as use of the amazing wood-fired sauna nearby.
Glen Dye is a private estate of approximately 30,000 acres with the cabins and cottages situated in the centre, surrounded by forest and moorland. Here you are right on the banks of the River Dye, where you can be at one with nature and wander through the luscious surroundings to your heart’s content. This location is fabled; watched over by the impressive granite tor of Clachnaben and at the northern end of the Cairn o’ Mount mountain pass. This is where the Howe of the Mearns finally gives in to the Highland boundary fault; wild, beautiful and very quiet - an outdoor paradise.
There are miles and miles of tracks on your doorstep for walking, cycling and running. These run through one of Britain’s finest private forests or across miles and miles of moorland wilderness. The River Dye is also on your doorstep where you can fish for trout. The river is an excellent place for canoeists when in spate (after rain). Banchory, Aboyne, Stonehaven, Dunnottar Castle, Balmoral, Braemar and Ballater are all within easy reach, as are literally hundreds of amazing places to walk, cycle, climb and yomp. The Highlands are a civilised place with its ’access to all’ policy enshrined in law, so if you love remote outdoor activities then this is the place for you. Beach 23 miles. Shop and pub 8 mile, restaurant 6 miles.
