Just minutes north of Fenelon Falls, in the heart of Kawartha Lakes, you'll catch your first glimpse of Blue Cottage. Set back from the road amongst the evergreen & pine trees, this is truly a cottage rental that will check the boxes of everyone's wish lists!
Opening the front door to the foyer I truly gasped. Between the stunning kitchen and wall of windows showcasing the river, I didn't know what to look at first!
The kitchen is stunning and has everything a chef could need for preparing the most elaborate feast or simply setting out prepared platters. No matter what is on the menu, it will be Pinterest-worthy in this kitchen. There is plenty of seating for all your guests at the dining table or along the island and peninsula, with the coordinating stools and the comfy couch and chairs in front of the wood-burning fire. This is a space that is begging for Charcuterie and Grazing Boards to be shared with your family and friends!
The west wing of the cottage is made up of 2 bedrooms - one with two twins and the primary suite featuring a king bed and single bunk beds. This is the perfect hideaway for a young family with your own deck access, a desk with a beautiful view if you really need some quiet time to catch up with the office and plenty of floor space for a pack-n-play or bassinet along with the bunk beds. There is even a massive ensuite. This will be the room that your friends try to claim first!
Not to be outdone by the main floor, the lower level is just as incredible. If the upstairs view off the deck wasn't enough, you have a second wall of windows with a patio view of the Burnt River and tree-lined shore on the other side. This is the games room, perfect for your most competitive guests. Whether you're a pool shark ready to pocket your winnings or a ping pong champion ready to win, there is plenty of space for all the fun and table games. On the other side of the room, you'll find seating for the big-screen TV for movies or televised games too!
In the lower level, the third bedroom and bathroom are right at the bottom of the stairs on either side, along with the laundry room. At the end of the quiet hall, you'll even find a sauna for relaxing after a long day on the water and challenging your friends.
Our first visit to Blue Cottage was right after the first snowfall of the season. There really is nothing quite like seeing Ontario cottage country with the open water, happily moving with the current and the snow-capped evergreens on the other side. While there are neighbours on either side of the cottage, it feels very private with water and trees straight ahead.
Like many Kawartha Lakes cottages, there is a gradual walk down to the water. For guests with mobility concerns, there are steps into the cottage down to the patio that are manageable and not too steep when compared to a staircase. Both the front and back lawns are perfect for children to run and play, with lots of options for yard games and of course, beautiful red Muskoka Chairs all around the firepit, just waiting for marshmallows, campfire songs and s'mores.
For boating enthusiasts, this is a fantastic location for both river and lake adventures. Located on the Burnt River as part of the Trent Severn Waterway, you can explore neighbouring Cameron Lake and Balsam Lake or visit Bobcaygeon for lunch! There are so many options on the Trent you could spend weeks exploring all the small Ontario towns, waterfront restaurants and shops!

Close-By Attractions
Lock 35, Trent Severn Waterway. Just 10 minutes from the cottage is a great place to watch the lock system up close. Surrounded by trees and vegetation, this secluded lock station is a popular spot for a day picnic and some boat watching.
Fenelon Falls. Known as the "Jewel of the Kawarthas", the town of Fenelon Falls and the nearby community of Cameron offer a little bit of everything with a mix of outdoor activities, rural landscapes, miles of open water, great shopping and dining, and numerous opportunities for exploring arts, culture and heritage. Fenelon Falls is just 5 minutes from the cottage.
Victoria Rail Trail. Just 5 minutes from the cottage, the trail, following the former CN rail line, is used year-round for hiking, horseback riding, cycling, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. To the north it follows the Burnt River to Kinmount, taking you through some of the County's most scenic land, through areas that except for the trail look like they've never been touched by man. To the south, towards Lindsay, it follows Sturgeon Lake, ending at the Ken Reid Conservation Area. There are hiking and mountain biking trails through the park. As well there is a marsh boardwalk, beach area and prime Osprey viewing.
Balsam Lake Provincial Park. Balsam Lake Provincial Park (20 mins) offers boating on the Trent-Severn Waterway, a large sandy beach, good fishing for Walleye, Muskellunge, Large and Small Mouth Bass, canoe, kayak and paddleboat rentals, and easy day-trip hiking trails.
Kawartha Settlers' Village. What was once a thriving family farm, Kawartha Settlers' Village is now home to a fascinating collection of over 20 historic homes and buildings. Experience what life was like for pioneers in the Kawarthas as you stroll leisurely through the Village and discover artifacts from 1830 - 1935.
