Hawaiian Acres Cabin | Faris' Forest

1 Bedroom Cabin in Hawaiian Acres, Kurtistown

We kindly ask that guests interested PLEASE read our entire profile before booking, as we're not for everyone. We're affordable because we think everyone should be able to enjoy what we call home, and while we welcome everyone as ohana, we find those less agrarian may find city accomodations much more suitable for their White Lotus expectations.
Faris' Forest offers a private & magical get away for your Big Island retreat. Designed for those looking for a humble eco-tourist retreat, We're located on a 3 acre working homestead between Volcano National Parks, Historic Pahoa town, and Hilo in a peaceful Ohi'a forest. Our land is home to 100's of plant varieties from exotic fruits like Cacao and Pineapple, to dozens of orchid varieties and other tropical flora. We have worked hand-in-hand with the land to create a biophilic experience in hopes of offering our guests an inspirational and energizing experience.
Accommodations are finished with a private 20' x10' raised cabin accessible by stairs, that offers 2 covered decks. Inside you will find two full bunk-beds, a small eating bar table overlooking our a yard area with two stool seats. A personal work area with/ accommodating cooler for perishables which we recommend block ice from Jhara General store in Kurtistown as it can last for days! (We do have freezer space if desired and gallon jug ice for private cooler free upon request, but please let us know in advance). There are personal clothing storage, as well as wi-fi options, though much of Hawai'i island is rural so please know internet is always subject to the use of the island. The private cabin space does have full electricity, though it is off grid so please refrain from using strong electrical draw items like coffee pots, curling irons, (High Heat draws are not usually suitable for off grid systems) etc... That said we do have a full working kitchen in the shared commons, where we are happen to show you all the ways to live off-grid, such as Dutch-ovens instead of microwaves, or how to care for cast Iorn which is the backbone of our cooking! We are happy to provide coffee italian style or french press, along with a simple breakfast of homemade sourdough & local fruit, or oatmeal & tea complementary between 7-8 a.m. every morning except for Thursdays. The commons is accessible with full accomodations within our capacity from 7a.m. -10p.m.
Full bathroom accommodations are also in the commons, but is accessible 24/7 with an outside entrance for convenience.
The Common is about 10 yards from our bunk bed bungalow, and we ask guests to treat it like a College dorm :) We turn down between 10p.m. & 7a.m. As late hours of the night, this helps with our offgrid living. Bathroom & shower are still accessible 24/7 as mentioned, but they will be without hot water and light at the times mentioned, so please use lighting we provide in each cabin for any evening needs with caution. We also have wi-fi available with the commons that extends with that we're told is great given our rural location, but most guests come to get away from these gadgets.
As a working homestead, please note that animals are present of the farm, Goats & Chickens, as well as our adopted pets; 4 very friendly farm Dogs, 3 cats, and 2 parrots. Please keep you safe distance from our goats and parrots, though we're happy to do a meet and greet when we're present, we must be present to meet them up close :) While we normally only accommodate two guests in any cabin at a tie, we do have an addition cabin space about another 1-2 guest if you're traveling in a larger party. Please ask for details if additional accommodations are needed.
We are in a less populated rural setting so roads are country for the last two blocks they are rocked, more than accessible, but please drive with caution. As Hawaiian ʻŌlelo (language) is used in Hawai'i and we support it's use, know that roads often have 2 (or more names). FOr this reason in your travels, especially rural, anyone providing a map should be followed above any phone app. Upon confirming your request we will provide a detailed travel rout that will allow you this easy access here.
We're always happy to offer suggestions for multiple places to journey if interested, from well know tourist spots like Akaka and Rainbow falls, to more free spirited treks like Kahena Black sands beach and the Lava flats (often clothing optional because of its secluded location, use caution in all travels). Some of our favorite spots are the cold ponds of Hilo whose waters are like ice dips and very rejuvenating, usually populated with giant green sea turtles (Please pono and keep your distance when turtle watching). For those wanting a warmer water experience the warm (hot) water ponds, newly created by the 2018 eruptions, offer a relaxing geothermic water experiences. The only thing we kindly ask during your visit is to please Malama Aina (Take care of the land), staying here or elsewhere.
Mahalo for your Kokua!
We're adding that recently VRBO had allowed a guest to enter our property under false pretence and rather than letting this hurt the opportunity to offer our experience to others, we are simply adding that all requesting guests give us a brief reason for their travels in your request. This will also give us an opportunity to make sure that we're a good fit, as we want to be affordable for every kind of traveler, we find some book us for just this reason but then aren't happy with the rural location, or the sound of animals. As anyone can tell by our reviews, we go above and beyond in sharing our home and love of nature with guests, but we also wish to share our home with guests who love nature and animals. You are considers Ohana here the monet your book, and many guests have returned for just this reason :) We reflect this in our affordable pricing as we know many have told us they book because we're not 200-300$ a night, as we wish to share our passion, and even participate in a free agrarian travelers hosting program for 4 years now. As we are not property managers with multiple property investments, our #1 goal is "Land and Education." This is our home and family, and we have support from amazing neighbors and community at large, so please know we ask for your reverence above all in visiting, Be Pono. We ask this of you and you will receive this from us always, along with any other request that is within our ability. Please in turn share your reverence that this is our home and way of life, however quirky, or simple, or different, we share it with joy and appreciation!
Mahalo nui loa.
***Disclaimer to those booking a stay who are not Tourists, or honest transients in search of lodging for need of a room, shower and essential accommodation. We recently had a guest who accessed our property under false pretense, pretending to be a visitor writing they were coming to "buy" a property, and once entrapped into hosting their two day stay, they revealed they were a realtor and proceeded to solicit us to sell our property, unwantedly. Any homeowner can imagine how intrusive this situation was, and while we consider it a backhanded compliment and approached it with unshakable customer service. We were met with very hurtful words towards our home and community, with no support from VRBO, so we are using this last part of our profile to request that if you have any other intention than to lodge for reasons of being a traveler or person in need of friendly accommodations, such other intention are not welcomed to book here. We regret that we have to add this amendment to our description as VRBO only allows 3 published rules, and we have found most platforms leave us as homeowners to fend for ourselves. We appreciate everyone who understands our need to provide this detailed disclaimer, and do so to keep our agrarian living standards free of such deceptive people who are only coming with want and valuation of this place we call home. We welcome all other honest guests in as family, any other intentions will not be tolerated for protection of Family, Home, Community and all other guests resident in good faith :)
