It offers interesting shops, restaurants, a large super market, a great farmers market every Saturday, cinema, banks, medical clinic, drugstore, post office, and gas station with an amazing view of the Kona Coast and every Friday there is also a FREE Polynesian show in the courtyard of the shopping center.
In addition the Keauhou Palena is very close to Kahaluu Beach Park. This is an extremely popular spot to surf, and snorkel. The snorkeling here is great! There are abundant tropical fish and you are almost guaranteed to see Hawaiian sea turtles (Honu). You don't even need to be in the water to see them. They often rest on the sand at dusk. You can rent snorkeling equipment right at the beach.
A further ten minute walk will take you to White Sands beach (a.k.a Magic Sands...as every year around March and April, the sands are stripped away by heavy seas and currents, exposing rough coral and making the area rugged for swimming. People still come here during those months because it is a good vantage point for observing migrating humpback whales.)
While not directly on the water beautiful sunsets are a VERY short, 2 minutes maybe, walk away every night.
