You’ll find Sweden’s highest mountain, Mt Kebnekaise (2104m) and its deepest lake, Lake Hornavan. Inuit (Eskimo) and Sámi people (Lapps) inhabit the land, and great artists revel in painting in this northern light – because of its remarkable consistency.
Norrbotten is one of the best extreme activity and adventure locations in the world, with temperatures up to 29°C in summer and down to -25°C in winter. Its clean, dry air promotes good health and attracts visitors young and old. The dry air makes the winter temperatures much more enjoyable, too. You can enjoy a host of different sports and pursuits, and in midwinter when it’s dark at about 2.15pm, the floodlights go on for many sports – so you can ski at most times.
Drive anywhere
The unpressurised road system is ideal for getting around. All the main roads and motorways are open 12 months of the year, and hire cars have metal-studded tyres fitted in winter (November-May), which means you can drive almost anywhere in the snow throughout the winter.
If you’re staying longer, why not travel north to the Arctic Circle and the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) or visit the ice palaces? You can even reach St Petersburg in Russia in a day, and a stopover in Stockholm on your way out or on your return journey makes for an interesting contrast.

Feel the thrill of winter... with snowboarding, skiing (downhill and slalom, cross-country, family skiing and advanced), climbing, skiddus, husky driving, ice skating, hunting, ice fishing, ice hockey – and more.
The Kanis family ski slope is just 15 minutes’ drive away. It’s about €20 per person for an evening’s skiing (16.00-22.00) with your own equipment, and about €40 per day to hire everything. You can also enjoy 4-5 other ski slopes within a 40-minute drive, and keen skiers can enjoy the international ski centre about 4 hours away.
