Come stay in this comfy art-filled home between two artist studios in beautiful Brooksville, Maine, minutes from a classic Maine beach, close to nature sanctuaries and hiking paths, one hour from Acadia National Park, and 15 minutes from Blue Hill, with grocery and gift stores, laundromat, banks, etc. It is home to a rich classical music scene, including Kneisel Hall chamber music summer school. One mile down the road is Tinderhearth Bakery, home of New York Times’ favorite pizza and brick oven bread. From chairs in our front yard, you can watch the sun set across the hay field and behind the trees on Wharf Road.
This rural property has a wonderful rustic, hand-made feel and features full kitchen, 2 queen beds, 2 child beds, a cozy living room with a sofa bed, and a bathroom with a shower soap, shampoo and hair dryer.
Built in 1899 by Mr. Tarbox, the town blacksmith, and expanded in the 1980s, it has been home to two artists – Susan Barrett Merrill, fiber sculptor and teacher, and Richard Merrill, musician and artist – for over 30 years. The ambiance is warm, eclectic and informal, an easy place to feel at home. The Merrills or family members have created most of the art and weavings on the walls. The dining room, kitchen and living room form the first floor in an open plan. You will see a pulley in the ceiling over the stairs, a remnant of the early 1900s, when the blacksmith shod horses what is now in the living room, and the family’s living quarters were accessed via a ladder, lifting water buckets for use upstairs.
These days, you will find a wall of books and a wall of instruments for you to play, plus a wall of VHS and DVDs upstairs, for retro fun via the VHS/DVD player in the living room.
You will find Welcome Book filled with maps and more information on Brooksville and its historic environs, along with brochures on activities and trips to Acadia National Park and Downeast Maine.
The home shares space with the hosts' two separate active art studio buildings, maintaining your privacy but available for brief visits when the artists are working.
