Positive: Part 1 (see dont like for part 2) We previously stayed in an 'eco pod' in the Glencoe area and were very pleased. I was probably assuming that I was about to book roughly the same thing. I was very wrong and, I admit it, I SHOULD HAVE READ THE DESCRIPTION IN DETAIL but did not. What I did rely on, as a reason not to delve more deeply into what I had booked, was the Booking.com confirmation email that said the unit had a kitchen and bathroom facilities. This was not the case (the campsite did, but not the unit). The site has no electricity and is at the ‘hardcore’ end of the ‘Eco’ spectrum. The site provides candles and rechargeable torches. I expects you to bring your own towels but provides emergency towels if you forget. The accommodation is several uninsulated, but very well decorated, sheds that have a lovely bed and a small log burning stove. We visited in October and it was cold (frost in the morning). The log fire warmed the shed well, but the heat dissipated very quickly due to the lack of insulation. We just put on extra bedding (lots) but the dogs suffered the most, even with their thick coats on. I got up every couple of hours to keep the fire on a very very low burn to keep the chill away. A bucket (large bucket) of firewood cost £6 and it lasted (ish) one evening but not through the night (an extra 1/3 of a bucket). Toilets were approx. 40m from the shed along a gravel footpath. There was 1 male and 1 female traditional wooden 3ft x 3ft ‘old style portaloo ’ which had a wooden bench seat with proper loo seat around the hole and a large bucket underneath to catch the poo. After each poo you sprinkle a layer of sawdust on top. Pee is separated by a funnel at the front on the hole. For gents, the urinal is round the back of the loo shed and is a piece of open air corrugated sheet that you pee against and it drains into the soil.
Negative: Part 2 The kitchens (x 2) are sheds that have tables, food prep areas and gas stoves. They do not have water but there is a single tap and sink outside. There is one shower for the whole site, which is in a shed on the side of the kitchen. Thankfully the water is heated by gas and is a good temperature. You stand on gravel. I have camped a lot, I have also spent a lot of time living in much more hardcore outdoors conditions than this (weeks on end with no tent). This site is OK (or good) if you have a strong personal eco drive and are prepared to accept the additional hardship in your holiday relaxing time and want to ‘detox’ from modern life. It will give you a bit of adventure and hardship that you can bond over when you drive / fly home and are sat in your centrally heated living room while drinking Frascati with your mates (…… do you remember the time that we had no mobile phone signal and had to poo in a bucket). However, for me, and I suspect most others people, I would rather pay the extra £20 per night and stay in a B&P.
Summary: Good if you you have a strong eco drive. If not then pay the extra £20 er night and stay in a B&B
