As you settle into your temporary home, you'll quickly realize the incredible proximity to some of Brighton's most beloved attractions. Just a short bus ride away lies The Laines, a maze of enchanting narrow streets filled with an eclectic mix of independent shops, vintage boutiques, and delightful cafes. Lose yourself in this captivating shopping district, where you can uncover hidden treasures, unique souvenirs, and a vibrant atmosphere that captures the essence of Brighton's bohemian spirit.
Londoners have been travelling to Brighton for beach getaways ever since the railway arrived here in 1841. The pebbled beach, Brighton Pier's amusement arcade and the Royal Pavilion are the main sights, but you'll also find hundreds of pubs and clubs catering to an energetic crowd. About 1.5 hours away from London, colourful, quirky Brighton is a favourite getaway destination among UK-residents.
If you're seeking a breath of fresh sea air, look no further than Brighton beach. This iconic stretch of coastline invites you to feel the sand between your toes, take a leisurely walk along the famous promenade, or simply bask in the glow of the stunning sunsets that paint the sky over the English Channel. Along the seafront you can find Volk’s Electric Railway (the oldest continuously running electric railway in the world), Sea Life Brighton (where you can view sharks and turtles from an underwater tunnel), Brighton Palace Pier and the haunting skeleton of the West Pier, and the sky-piercing Brighton i360, where you can admire panoramic views while sipping a glass of Sussex fizz.
For those with an appetite for culture and art, you'll be delighted to discover the thriving artistic scene that Brighton is renowned for. Immerse yourself in a kaleidoscope of creativity as you explore the city's numerous galleries, art studios, and theaters, all easily accessible from your studio retreat. There are theatres big and small throughout Brighton & Hove, as well as live music venues, cinemas (check out one of Britain’s oldest, the Duke of York’s Picturehouse) and nightclubs galore. From West End productions to local bands, to comedy, cabaret, drag shows and open-mic nights, no matter what day of the week it is, you’ll find something fun to do. Whether you’re visiting as a couple or as a family, with a group of friends or colleagues, or simply travelling solo, there’s an abundance of exciting and relaxing things to do, including: hiring bicycles, beach volleyball, rock-climbing, zip-wire, trampolining, stand up paddle boarding, wakeboarding, canoeing, skateboarding, themed walking tours (such as ghosts, foodie, street art), pottery-painting, sea swimming, sauna on the beach, yoga classes, meditation classes, escape rooms or going to see premier league Brighton & Hove Albion play at the American Express Community Stadium – to name just a few!
There’s no shortage of iconic landmarks in Brighton. The Royal Pavilion is a palace like no other, brimming with decadence and Eastern inspiration, and rich with stories of its former occupant, the party-loving Prince Regent. Right next door is Brighton Museum & Art Gallery, and between the two are the Pavilion Gardens, a perfect place to picnic in the summer or go ice skating in the winter.
With eight miles of beach stretching from Shoreham to the picturesque village of Rottingdean, you can always find a quiet spot to sit and read or go for a swim. You’re also never far from a green space in Brighton – the city has seven Green Flag parks to choose from. But if you really need to get out into some wide open space, the South Downs National Park is a 30 minute bus journey from the centre of town, and with its International Dark Sky Reserve status, it’s also a great place to go star-gazing at night. With Stanmer Park in one direction and the dramatic landscape of Devil’s Dyke in the other, you’re just a short bus or cycle ride away from some quality green-bathing.
Brighton is also a great base from which to explore the historic towns of Lewes and Arundel with their medieval castles, stunningly beautiful Cuckmere Haven and the Seven Sisters Country Park, the Bluebell Railway and numerous Sussex vineyards, that are now rivalling the Champagne region in France for their award-winning sparkling wines.
Getting Around:
One of the easiest ways to get around Brighton and Hove is by bus. All buses have disabled-access and can take you all over the city from Hove Lagoon to the Marina, or from Brighton Station to Devil’s Dyke in the South Downs National Park. If you’re heading from Brighton to Hove, there are lots of bus routes that run between the two or you can hop on a direct train (it’s one stop). There are taxi ranks and bike hire points at both stations. In fact, bike hire points can be found all over the city, including the parks, and while many roads have dedicated cycle lanes, one of the easiest and most enjoyable bike rides you can do is along the seafront, where a cycle lane stretches from Hove Lagoon to Volk’s Electric Railway. Check out our online Brighton and Hove cycle map to discover the best routes.
Brighton is the last stop on a train line that links directly with London Victoria, Clapham Junction and East Croydon, as well as being linked with London Bridge, London Kings Cross and the Eurostar terminal at St Pancras International on a different line. Journey times vary depending on the number of stops, but from London Kings Cross it takes around 1h 15mins, while from London Victoria it can take as little as 48 minutes. London Gatwick Airport sits about halfway between London Victoria and Brighton, meaning you can get from Gatwick to Brighton by train in approximately 30 minutes.
Brighton is also a 30 minute train journey or a 45 minute bus ride from the nearby port of Newhaven, from where ferries run regularly to Dieppe. It’s also easily accessible from the ports of Southampton, Portsmouth and Dover.
