The Bird Hide - Romantic Wood Cabin in a spectacular lochside setting | Cabin in Dalmally

1 Bedroom Cabin in Dalmally
The Bird Hide is an off grid furnished cosy cabin which sleeps 2 in a double bed in an extraordinarily beautiful setting.
Relax by the woodburning stove, put the whistling kettle on for a cup of tea, watch the birds or walk 80m to the lochside to wild swim, fish or make a bbq.
There is no electricity, running water or wifi although 4G works well off a mast on Ben Cruachan opposite.
There is a box with games, books and hammocks, as well as cooking utensils & crockery. A separating compost toilet completes the off grid experience.
There is a bbq area at the pier below the hut with a table and benches as well as a fire pit at the cabin.
The stars are amazing!
The Bird Hide has tongue and groove walls that are constructed from 45mm logs, the wood is milled from slow grown sustainably grown Northern Spruce timber. There are 3 double glazed windows facing the loch in all directions. There is no running water inside the Bird Hide or loo and we provide drinking water in 2 x 5l bottles. There is no shower therefore apart from a dip in the loch with a bar of soap. There is water available at the farmhouse 24/7 for refilling these along with sockets, fridge, washing machine and tumble dryer.
Bring waterproof shoes/boots as there are great walks in the hills around and always bogs and burns to be crossed. If there has been heavy rain there can be muddy patches on the track too.
Cooking is done either on the top of the woodburner, on a kadai type barbeque next to the hut or on a stone home made one on the shore. There is a large outdoor dining table alongside the hut with a backgammon and chess board painted on it
There are two hammocks which attach to the four large hooks on the pier. You need to walk out 10m into the loch to get to these, the idea being once you are in the hammock you are suspended over approx a foot of water.
The Bird Hide is your own. It has been decorated by the owner who is an artist and has quirky painted details on the furniture and doorway. There are both candle lanterns and fairy lights powered by a power bank and a cosy wood burning stove for making a cup of tea or hot chocolate, or simple one pot cooking. All bed linen and towels are provided.
There is a starter basket of wood and kindling for the woodburner. We recommend the dried sawdust type logs or peat that you can buy in slabs from garages if you need more. Logs in garages are often too big for the stove and/or not dry enough.
There is space to park your car by the Bird Hide. Please make sure you park inside this fenced off area just in case a cow wishes to admire herself in your wing mirror. There is also space marked for the guests car at the Bolthole 100m away to also park in this area. Please make sure the gates are always closed. The field is nearly 2 miles long, the cattle and sheep who are usually in the field will wander past most days and you should not walk amongst them particularly when they are with their calves. For this reason there is a strict No Dog policy at the Bird Hide.
The track from the main road down to the Bird Hide is a rough farm track and not suitable for very low cars. There is ample parking at the farmhouse which is a 10 minute walk away if you prefer to leave your car there.
We will give you directions and the what3words reference to the Bird Hide 2 days before you arrive and let you know how to locate the key.
Arriving by car is essential, although some guests do arrive by bicycle and others by boat which they leave tied to our pier for the duration of their stay. There are no taxis or Ubers in the area so arriving by train 4 miles away entails a long walk. It is not advised therefore.
Argyll is the most beautiful place in the world and the views from the Bird Hide are out of this world and change all the time, but please bear in mind there are days it rains, days it is windy, days where there are midges and days the sun can burn you very easily. Please be prepared for all 4 in a day. In winter the nights draw in early - in summer it hardly gets dark at all.
The hut sits in a totally unspoilt part of the beautiful Scottish Highlands. It is surrounded by a working farm, the field is covered in bog myrtle (the plant they use in midge repellant), wild cotton, celandine and orchids in the summer and foragers can find rowan, blackberries, mushrooms, sloes, sorrel etc at other times.
There is a resident eagle and a pair of ospreys that come back each year that are a delight to watch as they fish in the bay below.
The area is a rural and secluded mainly farming community, and the perfect base from which to explore the mountains, lochs, historic castles and ruins of ancient stone circles. There are 7 castles on the loch itself.
It is a designated area of outstanding beauty and the hill above a Site of Scientific Interest. You can see the stars at night and hear little more than the birds and the train that rumbles along the West Highland Line 3 times a day the other side of the loch. The Old Military road runs from the farm up to the monument in Dalmally (no cars on it) and is a great walk with a picnic to see the views out to the Isle of Mull. There is an excellent restaurant and pub in Lochawe (Cruachan Inn). The George pub in Inveraray has won many awards and is essential dining.
We provide a basket of tourist leaflets and can also give you recommendations of places to go that are off the beaten track.
Fishing from the shore in the field is free provided you ask me for a permission slip as landowner. If you fish from a boat you will need a permit. Boat hire at lochawe.net is currently closed (2021)
The pier area is also accessed by ourselves and our guests occasionally.
The Bird Hide is a great stopping off point if you are heading out to the Islands, climbing, or walking the West Highland Way.
I hope I have covered everything here, but if you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask.
