On the ground floor, an open-plan living area is a relaxing space with huge patio doors that bring the outside in. The lounge is the perfect spot to unwind with its plump sofas and chairs, mahogany furniture, and colourful artwork on the walls. There’s even an open fireplace to keep things cosy on cooler nights. Overlooking the lounge is a dining table, with seating for six people, and a separate kitchen kitted out with microwave, dishwasher and cooking utensils.
Also on this floor are four bedrooms. The rooms feature a mix of double and twin beds with a bunk bed room also having two additional pull-out beds that the kids will love. Villa Mara is just a 10-minutes drive from Praia Grande, the largest beach in the Sintra region. It’s a sandy beach and a peaceful place for topping up your tan. The rolling waves also make it a popular spot with surfers and bodyboarders, and you can rent a board at one of the surf rental stores when the ocean waves are too intense; head to the seawater swimming pool located on the northern side of the beach. The pool overlooks the Atlantic and is over 100 metres long. Open from May to September, it’s perfect for families and has a designated area for children.
History lovers will also enjoy marvelling at the huge cliffs that rise up from the beach. These cliffs are home to fossilised dinosaur footprints dating back 100 million years, and a winding staircase provides access to the footprints, although access is limited due to rockfall. Just south of Praia Grande is Praia da Adraga, a sandy little cove and a local favourite. It’s a 15-minute drive from the villa, or for a walk in nature, follow the trail from Praia Grande through the pine forest to Praia da Adraga.
Also worth a visit is Cabo da Roca, a 20-minute drive away. Known as the edge of the world due to it being the most western point in Portugal and all of Europe, it is a stunning place to watch the sunset over the roaring Atlantic Ocean. There’s also a lighthouse and cafe here and plenty of hiking and cycling trails, so you can also discover the dramatic landscape on your bike or foot. While the coastline offers some great beaches and hiking trails, head east to Sintra and discover historic buildings, palaces and a Moorish castle with breathtaking views over Lisbon.
Just a 15-minute drive from the villa, be sure to visit the old town and the atmospheric Palacio Nacional, considered to be one of Europe’s finest palaces. Afterwards, head to Quinta da Regaleira, an elaborate estate with a beautiful garden featuring fountains, terraces, and grottoes, then stop for a queijadas da Sintra (sweet cheese pastry cake) at one of the local cafes.
