A holiday in Ogliastra can indeed become an emotional voyage of discovery of a land characterized by the presence of numerous natural monuments and the breath-taking beauty of its landscapes. Not to be missed is a visit to the caves, the most spectacular of them being Grotte Su Marmuri at Ulassai and Grotta del Fico along the coast of Baunei. Grotta di Su Marmuri, which takes its name from the peculiar colouration and the aspect of its conformation, is almost alive and, with its kilometre of length and the average of its ceilings at 35 metres, it is known as being one of the most imposing caves in all of Europe.
Grotta del Fico starts at about ten metres above sea level and digs into the imposing limestone cliffs of the Gulf of Orosei (Baunei), and is particularly important due to the siphons that connect it to the sea, through which the monk seal would swim. Gola di Su Gorroppu, among the most famous natural monuments in Sardinia, can be found between the Supramonte of Urzulei and that of Orgosolo; with a length of 14 kilometres and its limestone walls at over 450 m high, it is considered as one of the deepest canyons in Europe.
Perda 'e Liana Point, in the area of Gairo, is an unmistakable reference point of our island, visible over a great distance and dominating the panorama. La Perda, a tower of rock, is the result of centuries of erosion which has caused the almost complete disintegration of the original tabletop. Its base is of a truncated conical form; the imposing tower, with its walls of around 50 metres, reaches a height of 1,293 metres.
The Steps of Saint George open up along the series of walls to the east which mark off the huge limestone tabletop of Taccu di Osini. This is a very narrow chasm, bordered by high, limestone and dolomitic walls, crossed by a narrow strip of asphalt leading from the nearby town of Osini. By passing this you can reach the taccu,
it is the only easy way for kilometres. The unique, majestic aspect of the chasm is awe-inspiring due to the sheer height of the walls and the narrowness of the chasm itself. With regards the previous monuments, just as well known is Su Sterru, the deepest abyss in Europe. It is located in the valley of Golgo and extends above the town of Baunei, at an average of 400 metres. For nature lovers, the various natural oases of the province will be of notable interest.
Among these, worth remembering is the Forest of Montarbu, which covers nearly 2,800 acres, principally in the area of Seui but also covering a small part of Ussassai. Also worth visiting is the wildlife reserve of Urzulei. Tourists choosing to visit Ogliastra, not only for its beautiful sea and landscapes, but also to learn its history and culture, can visit the various archeological sites of the pre-nuraghic and nuraghic periods scattered around the territory.
The hypogenous Necropolis of Lotzorai is made up of at least seventeen domus de janas (tombs dug into the rock), constructed mainly along a planimetric longitudinal plan, of a mono-cell and multi-cell arrangement. The most ancient of these dates back to the Neolithic Period (3800-2900 BC).
The Archeological Complex of Scerì is located on a granite tower in the area of Ilbono. The complex, in a good state of preservation and brought to light by various excavations, is made up of a nuraghic complex with an annex of a village and two domus de janas.
The Archeological Park of Selene, found within a thick wood which lends it an even more suggestive aspect, is made up of a nuraghe (of which only the foundation remains) surrounded by an agglomerate of around 200 huts which formed the village, and two giants’ tombs (communal tombs) at about 500m away. tombe dei giganti (tombe collettive), distanti da quest'ultimo circa 500 m..
The Archeological Route of Villagrande Strisaili offers a vision of the nuraghic civilization via monumental testimony of great interest, linked to living conditions, religion and funeral customs in an extremely fascinating environmental context. The monuments which can be admired are a giants’ tomb, a pre-urban settlement and a megaron temple, so far unique in Ogliastra, with its four cells possibly linked to the cult of water worshippers.
The nuraghic complex of Serbissi situated above the limestone heels of Osini, reached via the Steps of Saint George, is made up of a nuraghic complex, composed of a central tower and three others, a small village of 8 huts and a grotto beneath, which allowed the inhabitants to pass under the mountain. From the summit of the main nuraghic tower, you can admire a stunning panorama.
The fascinating coastal area of Ogliastra with its crystal-clear waters, is hugely varied; made up of large, beautiful beaches, welcoming little sheltered coves and high rock faces that overlook the sea. You can find all kinds of beach, from fine sand to the large pebbles at Coccorrocci; sea beds that are deep right from the shoreline, ideal for swimming, or shallow, where children can play safely. Starting at Baunei in the north and continuing until Tertenia marina in the south, it is possible to experience some of the most stunning coastline in the whole of the Mediterranean.
Cala Sisine, along with Cala Luna the most important beach of the Gulf of Orosei, only reached by boat or after a long walk from Baunei. The view behind the beach is extraordinary, the clear golden sand mixing with small, white or cream-colouredpebbles, the sea is a deep green; staying within the area of Baunei, you can find another pearl of the Mediterranean, Cala Goloritzè. It is also only reached after a difficult trek on foot. From the beach made up of little white pebbles, you can admire a great limestone arch that opens up onto the water and the little stretch of shoreline is overlaid by the spectacular Aguglia, an enormous pinnacle around 100m high, a paradise for free-climbers.
Lido di Orrì a very long, wide beach stretching for several kilometres and alternating between fine, white sandy beaches and round rocks, sanded down by the sea’s action. The seabed remains shallow for tens of metres from the shore and the waters are as clear as crystal. On the border of Tortolì and Barisardo you will find the beach of Cea. The beach, over a kilometre long, is characterized by the presence of the whitest sand, waters of a hypnotizing blue and especially by the stacks of red porphyry, known as 'Is Scoglius Arrubius' (the Red Rocks) which reach from the sea at a height of about 20 metres.
The enchanting beach of Torre di Barì, a symbol of the town of Barisardo, is divided in two by the splendid Spanish tower that rises on a small rocky promontory. The sandy shoreline is several kilometres long, about 100 metres wide and is sheltered by a cool, welcoming pine grove.
The beach of Su Sirboni can be reached after a short walk but the effort is compensated for by the beauty of the place. It is made up of a white, sandy shoreline surrounded by splendid rocks of pink porphyry, and to its back is a landscape of untouched nature as a backdrop to the shallow waters of a bright blue-green.
The province of Ogliastra is a recently created province whose main towns are Lanusei and Tortolì. It is located in the mid-eastern zone of Sardinia and overlooks the Tyrrhenian Sea to the south and the east and is bordered by the province of Nuoro to the north-west and the province of Cagliari to the south-west.
It seems that the province was named after the olive trees which are abundant throughout the area, even though others attribute the name to the enormous monolith Agugliastra (or Pedra Longa) overlooking the sea along the coast of Baunei.
