Additional information: (Post-Pandemic businesses may have different hours)
Experiences: Ziplines at Pacific Crest’s office. For an amazing zipline experience; go to ziplinespc.com as well as Mountain High Ski Resort and the Jedi Tubing Park. Mountain Hardware now rents electric bikes for only $25/hour! They have four bikes available...call ahead to reserve.
Friday night Farmers’ Market: in town (about a seven minute walk) on Park between the banks there is a wonderful down-home farmers’ market every Friday from 3-5 p.m. During the winter it’s inside the community bldg. behind the Blue Ridge Inn.
Wrightwood Historical Museum: Open on Saturday from 10-4 pm. This quaint museum gives you a great idea about Wrightwood’s history. It also has a replica old cabin on site, an old fire engine, a mining camp facsimile, and a fireman’s quarters upstairs. Free and located next to Mile High Pizza on Helen and Cedar, just three blocks away! I highly recommend you visit!
Children’s Park, Skate Park, and Library (with internet and computers) are all on Pine Street and Helen/Apple Street.
Dog friendly restaurants in town: The Blue Ridge Inn (outdoor patio), The Village Grind (outdoor patio and fresh water for pups), The Yodeler (outdoor patio), Mile High Pizza (outdoor patio), and the Brewery has outdoor seating. The hardware store welcomes pups and always has a treat for them!
Babysitters/Dog sitters: I have many of my former students and their parents who are fabulous babysitters and dog sitters. Let me know if you are looking for one and I will send you their information.
Hiking: We have wonderful hiking year round and sledding in the winter! For a beautiful walk, cross the street to the Wrightwood Village Trail. If you head west (left or uphill) you will be in the village in about ten minutes. If you turn right, look for the tunnel about a block away (it’s a water pipe!) with “1936” above it, walk through the tunnel (it goes under HWY 2) and go for a hike. There is a stream (it does dry out) you can follow either to the left or right. If you go left (uphill), keep going and you will go through another tunnel (huge water pipe). Shortly thereafter you’ll see the Post Office and Hardware Store. You can take a shortcut home by crossing Hwy 2 back to the Village Trail. More challenging hike: Head uphill (left) on the Village Trail (if you continue on the trail it will take you to the village). When you get to your first street, Lone Pine Canyon Rd, walk straight across LPC and continue up on Oak. At the top of Oak, turn left on Sparrow. Walk the length of Sparrow (a long block) and turn right on Sycamore. Walk up the short steep hill and you are at the levee! If you go down to the levee you will see a stream (if it’s dry, just walk uphill and you will find water!). The further uphill you walk the more beautiful it gets. I would give yourself at least a couple of hours for this hike. Look for the very unique rock, Actinolite, green and crystalized. You will also find sugar pine pinecones (long and beautiful). Enjoy!!!
DRIVE TO HIKES:
Head up Hwy 2 to Mountain High West: 4.2 miles from the village. The large stone building on the right is the old visitors’ center.
1. If you drive up HWY 2, pass Mountain High West and stay to your left. You will get to Inspiration Point, just 2 miles up...a beautiful viewing area on your left. Right across the highway is the famous Pacific Crest Trail (PCT...think Wild). You can walk a portion of this 2,650 mile trail that goes from Mexico to Canada. I strongly suggest walking this historical trail.
Continue up Hwy 2 one more mile and go to Grassy Hollow...the visitor center is currently closed during the pandemic, but some wonderful hiking is available.
Or 2. If you drive up HWY 2, pass Mountain High and veer to your right. You will see a pull off area in a few minutes (.7 miles). You will have a great view of the ski areas as well as a wonderful paved hiking/biking area. The locals call it the JPL trail as it ends at the JPL observatory (not open to the public). The kids LOVE this easy but beautiful hike/bike/walk.
Or 3. If you drive up HWY 2 and go straight after Mountain High you will get to Jackson Lake (more like a pond if you are from the MidWest) in 3 miles. You may fish/hike/wade in this little lake. Don’t plan dinner around your catch, however. LOL Beautiful fall colors.
