Riverside Cottage history
A grandson of the original owner told me that the building was moved from Dulula. Many of the houses around this area in Rockhampton were also moved from areas such as Mt Morgan when the gold petered out and the towns' populations were decimated . The buildings were taken apart board by board and transported on a dray into Rockhampton and then re-esembled on the land here by the river.
The building was a government building (see the high A framed ceiling inside) and was possibly a school. The original building was 2/3 of the current length and an extension was added later. This extension is now the main bedroom.
The cottage lay derelict for 20 years or so until 2006 when it was sold and the present owner restored the building. A photo of the derelict building at that time is included in the photosection.
Wharf St where the building resides now was indeed a large wharf where sailing ships transported timber and other goods from Rockhampton to southern ports. The south Rockhampton suburb of Depot Hill was so called because immigrants were transported and housed there (as at a depot). The land at the time was rather wet in areas and the inhabitants were called Swampies. Many old timers of Depot Hill fondly call themselves Swampers. Ironically, there is only one slight hill at Depot Hill and most of the suburb is flat. The area is undergoing gradual renewal, being so affordable. so close to the city centre and with such large blocks. The river is its main attraction with a ready supply of barramundi and is a boater's paradise.
Fitzroy River
Do not swim in the river as a few crocodiles inhabit the river as well as bull sharks as the river is only 40 kms from the sea. The river is for fishing boating and contemplation - and great for photographers. You may be lucky to photograph a crocodile sunning itself on the opposite bank and sailing boats moor on the river so there is always much to see.
