House Coordinates:
You are in the Paso Ancho area.
Calle Pitty, Paso Ancho
Hot Water:
There is a light switch on the wall in restroom on the back wall near the toilet. Please DO NOT toggle this switch. This is for the hot water heater. If you mistakenly turn it off you will not have hot water for several hours. If you have children staying at the house, please insure they don’t play with this switch. Recommend 30-45 minutes in between showers to ensure each guest has sufficient hot water for their shower. Please do not take long showers.
Yuni, our Caretaker: Don’t be alarmed if you see our caretaker and his family on the grounds. He lives on the property in a small cabin.
Kitchen:
If you choose to cook, the kitchen should have everything you need, complete with pots, pans, dishes, cups, glass, and utensils.
Weather:
Panama has two seasons: dry season (Dec thru Mar) and rainy season (Apr thru Nov/Dec). However, in Volcán area it is cool year-round. If you are visiting Volcán during the rainy season, please stay vigilant when near the Chiriquí River. When the heavy rains come, there is risk of flash flooding and mud slides. During the rainy season, the area is lush and beautiful. During dry season, the grass can get brown and dry, but the weather is still very pleasant!
Fireplace:
Temperature in the area is always pleasant, but it can get a bit chilly and windy at night. You are welcome to counter the cold with a nice toasty fire! Wood is located behind the wooden bar in the driveway. We will provide wood for your first fire, but if you plan to have many fires, please buy your own wood. Please do not barbecue food in the fireplace. Roasting marshmallows is fine, but do not use it to grill food.
Chicken Coop:
Don’t be alarmed if you hear cock-a-doodle-doos in the morning! It’s part of country living in this area.
Local Dogs:
Don’t be surprise if you see dogs/cats on the property from time-to-time. One belongs to the caretaker and other strays come around from time-to-time. The dogs are rather friendly. There are no leash laws in this part of the country.
Electrical power: The power will go off from time-to-time. This pretty much happens all over the country. Fenosa, the Goverment’s power company, usually works hard to restore outages. The house is equipped with lanterns, candles, and a flash light should you need them. It doesn’t happen too often, but this is out of our control and you need to understand that this can happen. You can also buy additional candles and kerosene at the bodega/mini-mart right up the street, Ferreteria Hermanos Pitti.
Grocery Stores:
There are several places to pick up fresh groceries in the area!
Ferreteria Hermanos Pitti: This is a great place to pick up last minute essentials. They are right up the street within walking distance from the house. (We provide toilet paper, paper towel, bath soap and coffee for initial arrival. If your stay is more than a few days, you will have to purchase your own supplies to sustain you.)
Otherwise, there are two major chain supermarkets in the town of Volcán: Romero (a Panamanian chain) and Bérard (a French Swiss chain). Both are dependable with a lot of variety. You can also get most U.S. brands of your favorite things, but they are, of course, imported items, so they will cost you more. Both are located in the Center of town. There are several other supermarkets located on the main road in the town of Volcán.
Fresh Produce:
We recommend that you pick up fresh produce from the locals—it is always excellent. You’ll see these produce stands everywhere!
